Gold

Gold jewelry of good quality is solace for all during good times, and the bad. Thus, it is essential to pay attention while buying one. Unless alloyed with a comparatively small proportion of some other metal, pure gold is too soft to withstand wear as an article for use or adornment. Purity of gold is measured in karat. Pure gold is 24 karat and is denoted by 999 or 9999, meaning 99.9 % or 99.99 % pure gold. Commonly used gold karatage in the world are:

  • 9999 = 24 karat = 99.99%
  • 999 = 24 karat = 99.9%
  • 995 = 24 karat = 99.5%
  • 916 = 22 karat = 91.6%
  • 750 = 18 karat = 75%
  • 585 = 14 karat = 58.5%
  • 417 = 10 karat = 41.7%
  • 375 = 9 karat = 37.5%

To ascertain the purity of gold in jewelry, a Hallmarking method is used. Hallmarking, i.e. assessing the purity of gold, has been in existence for nearly 700 years. In fact, it claims to be one of the oldest forms of consumer protection. Hallmarking was introduced in India in 2000, but is yet to come into existence in Nepal.
